Richard Alston Dance Company comes to Virginia Arts Festival for their fourth visit next February. A new dance - Arrived, Alston’s latest creation, has been commissioned by the Festival, marking the 400 years since twenty Africans arrived in Virginia. That same year, 1619, the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi wrote his seventh book of Madrigals, and Alston has chosen this beautiful music to be performed live alongside the dance . The dance will be a wonderful collaboration between Richard Alston, his dancers and students of The Governor’s School for the Arts.
Also in this program, Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance’s exciting Detour with the dancers charging around to the driving rhythms of Michael Gordon, and two dances by Alston, Proverb a flowing dance to the mesmerising vocal music of Steve Reich and Brahms Hungarian, a rollicking closer full of intricate steps done with a Gypsy panache to be played live by pianist Jason Ridgway.
