Shift is The Place’s celebrated senior youth dance company, for young people aged 14-19 years.
Under the guidance of a highly experienced professional team, the Company meet on Thursday evenings during term-time from 5.30 - 8.30pm to create and rehearse a range of choreographic works. The emphasis of the Company’s work is to develop performance skills and improve the creative and technical skills of its company members. Throughout the year dancers will work on commissions by professional artists, their own choreography and collaborate with designers from Wimbledon College of Art.
Luca Silvestrini, Artistic Director of Protein, has choreographed a new work for Shift this year entitled XOXO. The piece was premiered as a work in progress at Fresh at The Place in December 2011.
During its 13 year history, the Company has worked with numerous well-known choreographers such as Maresa von Stockert, Lisa Spackman, Martin Lawrance, Vanessa Haska, Shelly Love, Tom Dale, Zoi Dimitriou, Darren Ellis and Rick Nodine. The company performs at dance platforms and events throughout the year which have recently included Twickenham RFU Stadium, The Place, Big Dance, London Youth Dance Festival, O2 and the Royal Opera House.
Dancers will be expected to commit to the whole year as a Company member. Entry is by audition only and current members need to reapply on an annual basis. The current Rehearsal Director is Hilary Stainsby who has worked with Bedlam, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, Tilted Productions, Tom Dale and Joe Moran. Hilary is also Lecturer in Advanced Dance Studies for LCDS.
