Programme change: A Ceremony of Carols will replace Other Than I and In Memory. We apologise for any disappointment that this may cause.
A Ceremony of Carols is Richard Alston's latest piece, it is choreographed to Benjamin Britten's masterpiece for boys' voices and harp. The music is of magisterial simplicity, conjuring up a rich world of rapt and devout adoration; the dance is a celebration of a sheer surge of breath, a pure stream of sound. "Alston captures the soaring ecstasies and dark mysteries of Britten's musical vision." The Guardian.
Shimmer is a dance to the sun-drenched music of Ravel played live by Jason Ridgway. Julien Macdonald’s fabulous, jewel-encrusted cobweb costumes illuminate dazzling streaks of limpid choreography in a ravishingly beautiful piece of theatre. “Alston's barefoot dancers look as if they have been sprinkled with fairy dust. The effect is magical….It’s one of Alston’s most quietly moving dances” The Times.
The programme is completed by Shuffle It Right featuring private recordings made by the American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, who himself sings, whistles and plays piano on them. The songs Alston has chosen – including Riverboat Shuffle, Ol’ Man Harlem and, of course, Star Dust – scurry along with wry little licks and punched out syncopated rhythms.
